Podcast Tastes Of Young Americans Show Political Divide.

What podcasts are Gen Z and young Millennials listening to most? Axios asked as part of its Generation Lab polling, and the results offer some insights into how political persuasion impacts the choices of 18- to 34-year-old listeners.


Axios says 27% of young people who voted for President Trump say they listen to The Joe Rogan Experience at least once a month, compared with 6% who cast their ballots for former Vice President Kamala Harris. Among Trump voters, Axios finds that 19% say they listen to Salem Media’s The Charlie Kirk Show monthly. And 18% tune into Daily Wire’s The Ben Shapiro Show. Kirk and Shapiro both have much lower listening numbers among Harris voters, each getting 3% monthly listening.


But it is Barstool Sports that is the most popular among young people who voted for Trump. One in three (34%) of young Trump voters say they listened to a Barstool Sports podcast in the last month vs. 9% of Harris supporters.


Among news and political shows overall, The New York Times-produced The Daily came out on top, with 12% saying they listen to the morning news podcast at least once a month. It was followed by a trio of conservative podcasts. Salem’s The Charlie Kirk Show ranked second at 7% It was followed by Daily Wire’s The Ben Shapiro Show (6%) and The Candace Owens Show (5%).


The Joe Rogan Experience comes out on top in Axios’ comedy and entertainment category. It says 13% of young listeners tune into Rogan’s show at least once a month. Alex Cooper’s Call Her Daddy ranks second at 9%, followed by This Past Weekend with Theo Von (6%).


In the true crime and mystery genre, Dateline NBC has the best numbers among 18- to 34-year-olds surveyed by Axios. It finds that 14% listen to the series, putting it three points ahead of Audiochuck’s Crime Junkie’s 11% and doubling Serial’s 7% monthly listening numbers.


In the sports category, Barstool Sports reaches 15% of young listeners each month, according to Axios. New Heights with Jason and Travis Kelce is second, with 8% reach. It is followed by Barstool’s Pardon My Take at 5%.


In the business and self-improvement genre, The Dave Ramsey Show is No. 1 with 17% of young people listening to his podcast. SiriusXM’s Freakonomics Radio is No. 2 with 4%, followed by SiriusXM’s The Mel Robbins Podcast with 3%.


Axios’ survey was conducted Feb. 21-28 from a sample of 972 young people, ages 18 to 34 nationwide. The margin of error is +/- 3.1%. Download the full podcast results HERE.
