Listening To News Stations Surged After Trump Assassination Attempt.

Audacy news stations experienced a 32% listening jump via streaming on July 13, the day a shooter attempted to assassinate former President Donald Trump at a campaign rally in Butler, PA. Mobile streams led the way with a 45% surge while smart speaker usage rose by 30%. The numbers reflect the increase compared to the same day the week before.

The listening spikes, reported by Audacy in a blog post, reinforce the role news radio plays during a breaking story. “This incident highlights just how omnipresent and reliable local news radio is when it matters most,” the company says.

Audacy owns many of the most listened to all-news radio stations in the nation, including WINS-AM & FM New York, KYW-AM/WPHI-FM Philadelphia, WBBM-AM/WCFS Chicago and KNX- AM & FM Los Angeles.

But it was the region closest to the event in Western Pennsylvania that saw one of the biggest spikes. Streaming of KDKA Pittsburgh shot up 55%, underscoring just how vital the station was for local updates. In fact, KDKA fed reporting to numerous other news outlets around the country.

On the West Coast, KNX Los Angeles saw a 41% rise as listeners tuned in for the latest information.

The listening increases across digital audio platforms confirm that “local news radio stations are truly with you during critical times, offering reliable and detailed coverage when needed most,” Audacy contends. “The real-time increase in listenership highlights audiences’ close relationship with their local news radio as their go-to source for information during crises.”

The audience engagement continued leading up to the first day of the Republican National Convention in Milwaukee. Audacy news stations registered a 5% rise in listenership on July 15, compared to the previous Monday, as listeners sought to stay informed and understand any potential impact on the convention.
