BBC Sounds Saw 12% Bump In Spoken-Word Listening During 2024.

The BBC says its BBC Sounds app had 2.3 billion total plays of podcasts, music and streaming radio during 2024 (January to November), including a 12% increase for on-demand spoken-word content.

Director Jonathan Wall says it has been a “fantastic year” for BBC Sounds, as it has acquired titles from podcast partners, including Tortoise Media, Noiser and Goalhanger.

“We delivered round-the-clock coverage of the biggest national moments including the elections at home and in the U.S., an action-packed summer of sport, and a record-breaking BBC Proms season,” Walls says. He also points to new show launches, including Miss Me? with best friends Lily and Miquita, Off the Telly with Natalie Cassidy and Joanna Page, and Joanne McNally Investigates, which saw the comedian pursue a new role as an investigative journalist.

The biggest show for BBC Sounds among its UK listeners was the daily news podcast Newscast. Its companion show Americast, with the latest insights and analysis from the U.S., ranked third. Sitting in second place was Limelight, a podcast that features fiction and drama serials, including Central Intelligence. The rest of the top 10 includes the paranormal encounters series Uncanny, Michael Mosley’s science series, Greg Jenner’s chat show You’re Dead to Me, Greg Foot’s investigative series Sliced Bread, the true crime series Intrigue, the comedy show Mark Steel’s in Town, and the true crime-history mashup Lady Killers / Swindlers with Lucy Worsley.

“I’m delighted to see such a wide range of genres making the BBC Sounds top ten list, demonstrating the incredible speech offering we have for listeners,” says Mohit Bakaya, BBC Director of Speech. “There truly is something for everyone from news and investigative journalism to comedy, drama, and history.”
